What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage refers to the ratio of fat mass relative to your total body weight. Both male and female carry different amounts of body fat percentage.

A male body-builder who is lowering his body fat percentage may have a percentage as low as 3-4%, where a female who is lowering her body fat percentage may have a percentage as low as 8-9%.

A male athlete can be in great shape and have 10% body-fat, where a female can have 180-20% body fat.

Body Fat Calculation Method

Our body fat calculation is based on US Navy Standard/USGC/U.S. Marine Corps Formula, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) preferred method. This formula calculates an individual’s body fat based on their gender, height, weight, waist and neck circumference.

What Is a Healthy Body Fat Percentage?

A healthy and fit body fat percentage depends on your age and gender, along with lifestyle factors like your physical fitness level and preferred types of exercise. As per the American College of Sports Medicine, body fat percentage can safely drop to around 10% for women and 3% for men.

Body Fat Calculators US Navy Formula

In US Navy is using different formulas for men and women to calculate the percentage of body fat percentage. Here is the calculation below –

For Men:-

Density = -0.191 × Log10(waist – neck) + 0.155 × Log10(height) + 1.032
BF% = 100 × [(4.95 ÷ density) – 4.5]

For Women:-

Density = -0.350 × Log10(waist + hip – neck) + 0.221 × Log10(height) + 1.296
BF% = 100 × [(4.95 ÷ density) – 4.5]

How to Calculate Body Fat Percentage?
